Secret Singer Tours America!
Yes folks, I am touring in America with a choir! Of course, it is a secret singing mission and I am in disguise as a guest member of the Amici singers from Bedfordshire. We have been staying with very kind American hosts and singing concerts and little impromptu bursts as we go. We spent a rainy day in Washington looking at all the memorials through the rainy windows of the tour bus and ende the day with a concert at Christian Community Presbyterian Church in Bowie. They were very welcoming …

The New Day-Time Class will be in Clitheroe!
Arrangements for the new class have now been made and it will start on Thursday 5th May at 10.30am – 12pm. We will use the Pendle Room at the United Reformed Church on Moor Lane and the cost is £5 per session. The format will be the same as the other classes and we will start by learning the songs for the Sing for Water event. It doesn’t matter whether you wish to attend the event or not, the songs are lovely and not difficult to learn. Those who wish …

New Day-Time Class
I am in the process of setting up a new day-time class, in Clitheroe. I was thinking that we should get even more people involved in Sing For Water (see other posts) and a new venue and time might be a good way of doing that. It will still be an open access Secret Singers class but we will start with the songs for the Sing for Water event. I am currently looking for a suitable room and the class will hopefully be on a Wednesday or Thursday morning 10.30am …

Easter Arrangements
Over Easter I am going on tour with a Ladies choir from Biggleswade, The Amici Singers. The tour is to Pennsylvania and Maryland, USA for 10 days and I am very excited about it! This will mean that unfortunately, there will be no Secret Singers classes from Thursday 22nd April – Monday 1st May inclusive. So have a lovely break and I will see you on my return.
Secret Singers Feedback
I would like to say a big thank-you to everyone who has taken the time to complete a feedback form for me. It is really helpful to know what you think. If you would still like to send in a form that would be great. Thankfully the results are positive so far with lots of lovely comments about the classes, the teaching, the venues and the songs. Some people were wanting some more well known modern songs and I am on the lookout for unaccompanied arrangements that are within the …

Changes at Secret Singers: Burwain Sailing Club
We are having to make a change at the Secret singers group held at Burwain Sailing Club. The committee have asked if they can reclaim the clubhouse for their monthly meeting on the first Monday of the month. They have tried moving to a Tuesday but changing the long held tradition of monthly Monday meeting has proved very difficult. As I don’t have another evening available to move the class to, we have decided to skip the class on committee meeting day and all members are invited to join either …

Sing for Water, first workshop report
Last Sunday (6th March) I went to Manchester with Hazel and Maureen from the Nelson Secret singers group. We attended the first of the song learning workshops for the Sing for Water North event. We had a very uplifting day learning the 6 songs and were heartened by the fact that the £15 we each paid will provide clean safe water for 1 person for a year! So we have done something very positive already. I now have the music and the sound files for all the songs and we …

Big Summer Sing
All the classes are going along very well and we are having loads of fun singing in our individual groups but just think how great it would be if we all have a jolly good sing together! I am planning for us to have a bit of a ‘do’ in July. The idea is to chose a night and a venue with a bar. We will then add in a ‘Jacob’s Join’ supper and sing together the songs we have been learning since the New Year. It’s not so much …

Sing for Water, an invitation
Secret Singers have the opportunity to join with other choirs in the Northwest to raise money for water aid and have some fun. The plan is to have a masssed sing in one of central Manchester’s squares on 19th June 2011 with lots of choirs joining in. Prior to that date there will be two rehearsal days in Manchester (details to follow) at which we will learn the songs. Participants will pay £15 for each of those days and then on the day itself there will be a rehearsal at …

So, why should you sing?
There has been lots of research into singing and wellbeing to prove something that people who sing regularly already know. Singing makes you feel better, it lifts your spirits. It takes you out of the cares of the day and can release endorphins (those feel-good chemicals we get from sex and chocolate!) Singing physically reduces tension in the body and lowers the levels or stress hormone (cortisol) in the blood stream. Singing improves your posture and breathing and has a positive effect on your circulation– oxygenating your cells. Singing is …
